On Sunday, December 17, 2023, the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation and Massachusetts State Representative Brandy Fluker Oakley hosted a coat donation event at a YMCA in Dorchester. Thirty-four WeLoveU volunteers united to prepare the event space for families to enjoy a memorable experience.
In total, 153 people attended, and the group distributed 68 new winter coats, 41 scarves, six hats, and six pairs of gloves. The beneficiaries ranged between five and 10 years old. After the children picked up and tried on their new coats, they stopped by other stations. Volunteers prepared a photo booth, face painting, and a snack station with hot cocoa and popcorn. The parents also stopped by the information table to learn about the WeLoveU Foundation.

A Heartwarming Day of Giving Back
“Donations like these are critically important because there are so many in need who don’t always have the resources to provide for their family,” said State Representative Brandy Fluker Oakley. “These donation events are possible when folks are generous with their hearts, realizing that we are all one community, and understanding that we all got here because someone helped us along the way. Giving back to those behind us is the right thing to do, and I’m so happy to do so with WeLoveU.
Without proper winter clothes, children are at a higher risk of infections like pneumonia. In response to these concerns, WeLoveU will continue hosting annual donations for children to receive resources for a warmer winter.
“We’ve had a great experience today. The volunteers have been so helpful since the moment we entered the room. We’re so happy about the new coats. The kids are so happy. Thank you so much, WeLoveU,” said Corrine, a guest.
The coat donation is part of WeLo’s Winter Weather Clothing Drive, which began in 2021. It works toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 3, No Poverty and Good Health and Well-being. With rising living costs, families may face difficulties affording new winter coats for their growing children.

I had a great time participating in WeLo’s Winter Weather Clothing Drive. Seeing the children smile after picking out a coat of their choice, getting their face painted of something of their choice, taking pictures with their family, and grabbing a pastry, popcorn, or refreshments on the way out warmed my heart and made me so happy. I also loved seeing the volunteers work in unity with the State Representative. I look forward to participating in the next event. WeLoveU!
I was so happy I was able to part take in this event with State Representative Brandy and other WeLoveU Volunteers! It feels great to be apart of something and just help people and seeing them smile, and letting them know there is people out there who cares and wants to lend a hand.
This event was awesome. The volunteers were so happy and the families were too. I wish we could do something like this every week. It was incredible. Shot out to rep Fluker-Oakley for attending and bringing that bright energy as well. She fit right in.
