The Intl. WeLoveU Foundation held a blood drive in their new New Windsor, NY, office on Sunday, February 19, 2023, in partnership with the New York Blood Center. Small businesses, volunteers, and residents supported WeLoveU’s first open house-like event. Not only was the blood drive the first in the U.S. headquarters office, but it was WeLoveU’s 504th Worldwide Blood Drive. For decades, WeLoveU has been hosting blood drives worldwide to relieve blood supply shortages.
Set up began at 8 a.m. with the New York Blood Center team transforming the multipurpose room into a blood donation area. Blend, a local smoothie and salad bar, was an excellent addition to the canteen area. The Blend team served sweet treats and drinks to keep donors hydrated and from getting dizzy.
By 9:30 a.m., blood donors started trickling in to register and donate blood. With warm smiles, greeters welcomed the blood donors. A guide explained the WeLoveU Foundation’s work through panels, and residents inquired about local volunteer opportunities since, for many, it was their first time learning about the organization.
Throughout the day, over 100 people attended the blood drive. From them, 91 pints of blood were collected. Many of those pints came from first-time donors who were excited to give the gift of life. The blood drive concluded at 4:30 p.m. In total, the blood donated can save more than 273 lives.
The WeLoveU volunteers pledge to lead their communities to donate blood safely yearly. More than ever, donating blood has become an essential healthcare service. Because blood can’t be substituted, WeLoveU’s readiness to organize blood drives and encourage people to donate their blood warms the hearts of those managing the donation sessions at the blood centers, which also play a critical role in saving lives.
“We want to thank the volunteers who have come out today and give their time to this blood drive. At a time of critical blood need, you are all giving of yourselves,” said Louisa Duffy, manager of the New York Blood Center.
