Along the beautiful ocean in Tampa, Florida, there lies the Courtney Campbell Causeway. It is a highway that stretches across Old Tampa Bay, where many people travel and enjoy recreational activities under the sun.
However, as time went by, the beaches along the Causeway gradually became filled with trash and other debris between the rocks. Consequently, many people and marine wildlife became exposed to these wastes that are potentially harmful to the health.
On Sunday, April 18, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation set out to clean the beaches along the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa, Florida. This effort is part of the Clean WORLD Movement. Determined to provide a clean and safe environment, about 60 WeLoveU volunteers and Gannon University students helped clean the causeway.
At first glance, the shoreline appeared beautiful with calm scenery accompanied by warm weather. However, styrofoam, plastic cutlery, bait and tackle, latex gloves, straws, face masks, mattresses, sneakers, and even a blown-out tire were among the hidden trash collected.
As a result of the beach cleanup, volunteers filled 37 bags of trash. The volunteers from Gannon University recognized WeLoveU’s actions and said, “You are my angel!” Frank Hibbard, Mayor of Clearwater, volunteered alongside WeLoveU and said, “We need you to come again.”
Clearwater Councilmember Kathleen Beckman also showed her support by cleaning with the volunteers. Many people walking the Causeway appreciated the work performed by the WeLoveU Foundation volunteers and expressed gratitude for cleaning up the trash.
The International WeLoveU Foundation hopes to continue encouraging the global village to make an effort to achieve and maintain a clean environment. By cleaning the beaches along the Courtney Campbell Causeway, WeLoveU helps fulfill four Sustainable Development Goals. The goals include SDG #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, #13 Climate Action, #14 Life Below Water, and #15 Life on Land.
