On Sunday, April 11, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation hosted a record-breaking blood drive in Arlington, Texas, at the AT&T Stadium in partnership with WSS, Carter BloodCare, Dallas Cowboys and Papa John’s. The event marked the largest single-day blood drive in Texas and the grand finale of the three-month-long National Blood Drive campaign.
Joining Forces With Carter BloodCare
Because of the pandemic and the recent winter storms, blood banks and hospitals in Texas were in dire need of blood supply. “The current state of blood shortages is the worst it has been in decades,” explained Carter BloodCare CEO, Dr. Merlyn Sayers.
Carter BloodCare served as the primary collector on-site to service the donors. They are a regional blood bank, serving 56 Texas counties with more than 20 donor centers.
Our Top Priority: Safety
The safety of all participants was at the top priority while planning for the blood drive. To hold the blood drive at the AT&T Stadium, WeLoveU met the Tarrant County Health Office’s required protocols and the CDC guidelines for events and gatherings.
Some of the safety measures included reducing the capacity, pre-registering donors, scheduling all donations times, temperature checks, sanitizing stations, physical distancing, and mask requirements.
“I’m confident that everything was safe today at this event. Of course, safety comes first, and I felt that that was done well today with this organization in an efficient way,” explained a WeLoveU volunteer after donating with her friends.
Donation zones, buses, and scheduled shuttles were spread across the venue’s terrace and parking lot. The surfaces were disinfected with hospital-grade sanitizer after donors gave their blood.
Special Guests Support the Texas Blood Drive
Jerry Jones Jr., executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer; Tony Dorsett, Hall of Fame and Super Bowl Champion; Jeff Williams, mayor of the City of Arlington; Rod Aiken, chief marketing officer; DeMarcus Lawrence, defensive lineman and captain of the defense for the Dallas Cowboys; Isaac Alarcón, defensive tackle; Tyrone Crawford, retired defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, and additional guests joined the event to show their support.
Time to Donate!
Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams declared April 11 as “WeLoveU Day” after surpassing the record of most blood donations. Previously, the record in a single day was 900 pints of blood. However, the WeLoveU National Blood Drive in Texas collected more than 1,000 pints of blood. In total, more than 3,000 lives will benefit from the donations.
Hundreds of WeLoveU volunteers in bright green shirts arrived at the AT&T Stadium at their scheduled times to donate. Pre-screening for COVID-19 symptoms and temperature checks took place before donors entered the stadium lot.
Once on-site, donors maintained a physical distance and watched the YouTube Livestream from the Stadium LED screens while waiting to be called into the donation buses. After donating blood, donors stayed in the bus’s air-conditioned seating area. There they ate various snacks and cold drinks until they felt replenished enough to leave the Stadium.
After leaving the buses, donors could take photos at the WeLoveU photo booth, receive a bag full of treats, and tune into the Livestream from their devices to see highlights from the rest of the event. Among many courageous volunteers that donated, many donated blood for the first time.
WeLoveU volunteers traveled from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C, and other cities to help address the blood shortages for the people of Texas.
“I heard about it on the radio on my way home from work. I’ve been donating for 15 years, and I thought this would be a good opportunity,” said a Texas native after donating blood. “Thank you for putting this on today – I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
Another blood donor at the event shared, “There was a time when my mother needed an emergency blood transfusion, so donating today made me remember my mom and just how important donating blood is in saving lives.”

I was able to attend this amazing WeLoveU event! It is one of the best days of my life ever. Everyone was united and full of smiles even behind the masks! I give thanks to the Chairwoman Zahng Gil-Jah, all the volunteers, and blood centers for making this day possible. What an amazing event! This was by far the Largest blood drive I have ever been to/participated in. The Carter employees were amazing and very nice which allowed everyone to work in great unity!
I really must express I haven’t experienced anything like this before not just as a huge blood drive. As a community of passionate members committed to serving those in need and bringing so much joy at the same time I myself was overwhelmed with the overall unity of some many different people with different backgrounds coming together for one goal to save lives. I thank the chairwoman for putting on the biggest blood in the state of Texas ever.
