The International WeLoveU Foundation partnered with the Versiti Blood Center of Illinois to host a major blood drive at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on Sunday, July 10, 2022. As a result, 350 pints of blood were collected. Since one pint of blood can save up to three lives, the donor’s efforts can save up to 1,050 lives! The blood drive is part of WeLoveU’s health initiative and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal #3, Good Health and Well-Being.

Summertime Blood Shortages
Blood centers face a sharp decline in blood donations during summertime. With Independence Day festivities and people going away on vacation, the blood drive following the Fourth of July weekend was even more significant.
The blood drive ran from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A pep rally was held in the museum’s auditorium to kick-start the day. WeLoveU Vice President John Power shared about the Foundation’s background, like the Founder, activities, and upcoming events. For instance, there will be a backpack drive from July 31 to August 31 in partnership with Chicago Public Schools. The campaign is called Packs on Backs and Tools for Schools, and you can click here to learn more details.

Then, Versiti Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Brian Bautista presented an award to the WeLoveU Foundation for its continuous life-saving efforts through blood drives. Last year, volunteers donated blood in Naperville, IL, at the Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center with Versiti. Altogether, 95 pints of blood were donated, which can save up to 285 lives.
Furthermore, Illinois State Senator Linda Holmes presented a proclamation to WeLoveU and Versiti. Blood shortages are prevalent in the United States, and working towards ending them is commendable. The rally ended with performances from a stomp team and cheer squad comprised of WeLoveU volunteers. Afterward, Versiti staff accommodated hundreds of blood donors. The WeLoveU Foundation looks forward to holding future blood drives in the greater Chicago area.
