On March 13, 2022, the International WeLoveU Foundation held its 444th blood drive, and this time it was in Los Angeles, CA. The Worldwide One-Two Blood Drive took place in Dodger Stadium. WeLoveU partnered with UCLA Health, Houchin Community Blood Bank, Huntington Hospital, WSS, and Dunkin’ Donuts to make the gift of sharing life in LA possible.
WeLoveU Steps in To Help Blood Centers in Need
The pandemic canceled thousands of blood drives over the past two years. While COVID-19 cases are declining in California, blood banks and hospitals face severe shortages of blood supply. “One mass trauma can almost deplete our entire inventory, and that’s not a good place to be in as a community blood center,” explained Chief Operating Officer Martin Alonzo of the Houchin Community Blood Bank.
More than 250 volunteers and 450 donors from WeLoveU chapters throughout Southern California came together at Dodger Stadium to tackle the blood shortage crisis. They donated their time, blood, and love. The WeLoveU Foundation successfully surpassed its goal of collecting 445 pints of blood by collecting 469 units. In total, the blood can save more than 1,400 lives.
Special Guests Show Their Support
Among the participants, numerous professional athletes attended to witness the life-saving effort. Former MLB legends Fernando Valenzuela and Steve Sax, former NBA player Metta Sandiford-Artest, and NFL players David Long and Terrell Burgess expressed their support and gratitude to the Foundation.
The Foundation’s hard work was recognized by notable members of the Los Angeles community. Mayor Eric Garcetti congratulated WeLoveU by saying, “I want to thank Chairwoman Zahng Gil-jah for organizing this great event. Thank you all for your generosity.”
WeLoveU received four Certificates of Recognition; from LA City Councilman Paul Koretz; LA City Councilman Gil Cedillo; CA Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo; LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis.

Partners of the blood drive also expressed their gratitude when the event concluded. Dr. Dawn Ward, UCLA medical director of the blood and platelet center, said, “Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Our patients in LA county thank you.” UCLA Blood and Platelet Center Director Jowin Rioveros, said, “I’m very impressed with how the WeLoveU Foundation has put this together in terms of safety.”
Martin Alonzo said that WeLoveU Foundation is the “best organization out there. It’s the first organization that we at Houchin have heard of that does something this special, so when the opportunity arose to partner with [the WeLoveU Foundation], it was a no-brainer for us.”
The WeLoveU Foundation continues to host blood drives nationwide as part of its mission to save lives by donating blood and love.

Wow this is excellent. I love what Mr. Alonzo said about the We Love U foundation being the best organization out here. It’s true, I have not heard of any organizations that offer what they do. The fact that Metta Artest linked up with WeLoveU speaks volumes.
