On Sunday, September 26, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation partnered with the American Red Cross for a mega blood drive at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. Additional partners like the Sickle Cell Foundation and Chick-fil-A  supported the blood drive as well.

The blood drive helped replenish hospitals and blood banks in dire need of blood by collecting 228 units of blood. In total, that can save potentially 600 lives. And as September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, WeLoveU’s recent webinar taught ways to support the sickle cell community by donating blood. The Atlanta blood drive mobilized donors to act, and it’s helpful as Georgia has one of the largest populations of individuals with sickle cell disease.

Basketball Legends Support WeLoveU’s Atlanta Blood Drive

NBA Hall of Famers Dominique Wilkins and Dikembe Mutombo joined to support the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation’s blood drive.

“We’re here because of the WeLoveU Foundation. We’re here because we know our community is in a big need, and we want to respond,” expressed NBA Hall of Famer and philanthropist Dikembe Mutombo. “Thank you to the founder of this beautiful organization. I cannot wait to see you guys in the Congo because we still have more work to do.”

In WeLoveU style, the blood drive offered an extraordinary experience for blood donors, guests, and partners. In the Georgia World Congress Center, there was a photo booth and a stage for live performances and guest speakers. Musical artist, social media influencer, and WeLoveU volunteer who goes by Mr. Hotspot performed on stage, keeping the participant’s energy up while waiting to donate blood. The Atlanta blood drive was streaming on YouTube too.

WeLoveU Receives Two Proclamations

Fulton County commissioners and Councilman Bond from Atlanta City Council attended and presented WeLoveU with proclamations for their efforts to increase blood donation and promote Sickle Cell awareness.

Dr. Nina Anderson, the founder of TOVA Community Health, was also in attendance. She specializes in treating sickle cell disease in Delaware and moderated WeLoveU’s webinar last week. She shared a few words on stage. “You all took the initiative to care about a disease that was almost silent about five years ago.” She expressed her gratitude to all the donors whose blood types may match with sickle cell patients needing blood transfusions.

Throughout 2021, the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation hosted numerous blood drives across the U.S. The coronavirus pandemic has strained the nation’s blood supply, causing thousands of blood drives to cancel. However, WeLoveU volunteers came out to support in full swing. Since January 2021, blood donors have helped save more than 7,000 lives during WeLoveU’s National Blood Drive campaign.
