Our Global Responsibility
Time flies like an arrow and with busy lives, it’s easy to neglect our duty to protect our environment. For this reason, WeLoveU holds annual Worldwide Clean World Movement cleanups. The movement is a global initiative to promote a clean and safe environment through volunteer service activities. Volunteers all around the world clean in their respective regions and provinces to tackle environmental projects in their own backyards.
On the East Coast, Maryland is famous for its blue crabs. Unfortunately, the crabs have washed ashore from pollution affecting the Chesapeake Bay. Learning about this, WeLoveU volunteers came to realize how important it is to take care of their community and wanted to take action.
A Step in the Right Direction
More than 50 volunteers from Maryland and Washington D.C. gathered to clean Middle Branch Park in Baltimore on May 21, 2017. The park has the largest expanse of the Baltimore City skyline, as well as a wildlife observatory area and a boardwalk. However, over time the park’s surroundings have been plagued with litter. At 10 a.m., the volunteers started their effort in earnest. They broke into groups to cover the 150-acre park. With great excitement, they cleaned the trails, open areas, and docks along the shoreline.
While walking along the Patapsco River, they picked up food wrappers and water bottles left behind. It was along the river they saw crabs washed ashore. Fishing hooks and lines abandoned furniture, and countless weather-beaten planks of wood were also found. Because the wood was too big to put in trash bags, volunteers used their pickup trucks to transport them to the dumping site.
By the end of the event, the volunteers took a group photo with the Baltimore skyline in the background. With great results achieved through unity, the volunteers look forward to their next project.
